What Will Happen at Your Hearing Check?
Most patients will have two meetings with an audiologist. The first will be to diagnose your problem and select a solution, and the second will be a follow-up appointment for the fitting of your new hearing aid (if needed).
Your hearing check will consist of the following steps:
- History Evaluation – Your audiologist will ask you about your hearing and how it has changed. You may be asked to provide details about the situations in which you find your hearing is diminished. For example, many patients have problems when listening to music, in conversations, or on the telephone. It is not uncommon for patients to have problems in one scenario, and be fine in another.
- Otoscopic Observation – Your audiologist will use an otoscope to examine your outer ear, ear canal and tympanic membrane (or ear drum) to look for problems.
- Audiometric Evaluation – In this evaluation, you will listen to a range of sounds and state whether you can hear them or not. This reveals which sounds you have problems hearing, and at what volume.
Once these tests have been completed, your Audiologist will be able to explain your results and how to proceed with remedial measures. We can also provide you with a demonstration of how a correctly-prescribed hearing aid can improve your hearing.
The next step will be to suggest a suitable hearing solution, taking into account both your hearing requirements and your views on the cosmetic appearance of your hearing aid.
Sometimes your hearing problem cannot be solved by a hearing aid; in which case your Hearing Aid Audiologist will explain what other options are available to you. They will either offer an alternative treatment plan or, if none is available, will advise on lifestyle changes that will help you to cope with your condition.
